There is peace in knowing the universe is infinitely vast and that’s something that astronomy teaches us every day. It’s been one of my main interests my whole life and I’ve decided to explore my own space with this project.
The project is imagined as a simple concept of planetarium building cast away in a dark Icelandic desert much like our planet Earth is cast away in the depth of space. Main character of the building is the canopy made from the hyperbolic paraboloid structural system. It’s structural form allows it to function like a tensile structure and the gentle sagging of curves result in a simplified yet dynamic three-dimensional shell.
Dome of the planetarium has a glass top that enables the viewer to see the sky when underlayer is removed. The layered facade shape mimics the look of the surrounding desert as well as the shape of our galaxy.
